Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of Moringa oleifera bark powder as a bio-absorbent for mitigating the toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in domestic wastewater collected from Vidya Bharati College campus and enhancing the growth of soybean (Glycine max) seedlings. Subsequent experiments were conducted in triplicate, involving three sets: (1) control group with normal soil; (2) soil treated with varying concentrations of diluted wastewater (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) containing Cd and Pb; and (3) soil treated with the same wastewater concentrations supplemented with 2 grams of M. oleifera bark powder. Soybean seeds were immersed in the respective treatments for 3 hours and then incubated for eight days at room temperature. The results indicated that exposure to wastewater containing Cd and Pb significantly impaired seed germination, root and shoot elongation, and chlorophyll content. However, the incorporation of M. oleifera bark powder into the wastewater-treated soil notably improved these growth parameters, suggesting the bark's potential in neutralizing heavy metal toxicity. These findings underscore the promising application of M. oleifera bark as a cost-effective and sustainable bio-absorbent for phytoremediation, offering an innovative approach to utilizing contaminated wastewater for agricultural purposes. Statistical significance between untreated (control) and treated seedlings was determined using the student’s t-test and all calculated t-values indicating that the differences in seedling height compared to the control are statistically significant (p < 0.05).
