Abstract

Water pollution endangers the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems, affecting the diverse array of plant and animal life (flora and fauna) that inhabit these environments. The effects on flora include reduced photosynthesis due to nutrient absorption problems, altered growth patterns, and disruption of critical ecological roles. Toxin accumulation in tissues, disruption in reproductive cycles, and habitat destruction all occur concurrently in fauna. The interdependence of flora and fauna is being disrupted, resulting in biodiversity loss and overall ecosystem imbalance. Understanding these impacts is critical not only for aquatic ecosystem preservation, but also for recognising the far-reaching implications for human societies that rely on these ecosystems for resources and services. To protect the delicate web of life within aquatic environments, water pollution mitigation necessitates collaborative efforts, stringent measures, and increased awareness. This chapter provides a succinct overview of the numerous consequences of contaminants infiltrating water bodies. Further investigation into the wide-ranging effects of water pollution on the vital flora and fauna that shape our planet's aquatic ecosystems.
