Abstract

Toxicology is an interdisciplinary field that examines the adverse effects of chemical substances on living organisms, with emphasis on the dose response relationship and factors such as exposure route, species, age, sex, and environment. Aquatic toxicology, a sub-discipline, integrates toxicology, ecology, and chemistry to evaluate the impact of natural and anthropogenic chemicals on organisms from subcellular to ecosystem levels across freshwater, marine, and sedimentary environments. Methanol, an industrial chemical widely utilized since the 1800s in biodiesel production and as a denaturant in ethanol manufacturing, is recognized for its toxicity and environmental relevance. The American Methanol Institute (2010) projected its demand to reach 882 million gallons annually, underscoring the potential ecological risks of its release. The present study investigates the acute toxicological effects of methanol on glycogen metabolism in the freshwater fish Cirrhinus mrigala, with glycogen content assessed as a key biomarker of metabolic stress.
