Abstract

Reserve forests are important natural resources given by nature which play an important role in sociocultural, historical, economic, aesthetic and industrial development of a region. The forests maintained the ecological balance and biodiversity. The forests provide valuable raw materials for industries, maintains natural water supply, preserve wild life and biodiversity, control floods and prevent soil erosion, supply ethno medicinal plants, daily necessity of the peoples. The Assam is a state which has a rich forest cover approximately 26,832 sq km, or about 34.21% of its total geographical area. approximately 26,832 sq km, or about 34.21% of its total geographical area. The whole region of North east is a part of global bio-diversity hot-spot and also a part of two endemic Birds area i.e. Eastern Himalayan and Assam plain. The ecosystem of the forests area gradually degrading day by day due to lake of awareness of people and creates threatening to the life of flora and fauna. This study it is an overview observation that there has been a continuous process of changes in the forest area. Deforestation, encroachment, agricultural, Poaching and other economic and industrial activities have changed the nature of the area. Within the geographical territory of the study area there are Four Reserve Forests. All these belong to Assam Forest Department. Due to human intervention a large part of the forests is decreasing. Growth of human and industrial settlements and land uses for agricultural purpose are the major factors for decreasing the forest area. In view of the above, the major problems identified in the study area which are as depletion of forests area, conversion of Reserve Forest area in to agricultural purpose, loss of biodiversity and threatened to flora and fauna, encroachment etc. In this view an attempt has been made to study the present status of the Reserve Forest of Charaideo district, Assam to study the wild life of these Reserve Forests, identify the threatened flora and fauna of these Reserve Forests.
